12th Holly Heisman Memorial with full results

Posted by joshuamiltonanderson on August 10, 2014 at 12:40 AM Comments comments (1)

I wanted to thank everyone who participated in the 12th Holly Heisman Memorial! We had over 90 players, the most we have had when I have directed. We were also able to give out a large number of prizes and raise quite a bit of money for a great cause. If you failed to donate while at the event, but would still like to, you may do so at: https://www.philafound.org/tabid/160/Default.aspx?tp=SPEC&fn=Holly%20Heisman%20Memorial%20Fund

As for results, FMs Dov Gorman and Karl Dehmelt both went 4.5 out of 5 in the Open. In the U1500 section, William Yang scored a perfect 5.0 score. In the K-8 U900, Hyeonjin Kim went 4 and 0 to win that section. Full results are as follows:

Awards Committee Chairman and Chief Judge Joshua Anderson has sent this message:

I once again had the honor of presiding over the Chess Journalist of America’s award competition. The task brings with it the pleasure of working with journalists and chess players throughout the country. It also means getting to work with a large group of judges qualified in a great variety of fields.

The judges this year were: Dan Heisman, J. Franklin Campbell (who also is a tremendous help with all the computer/website work), Peter Minear, Rodion Rubenchik, Dov Gorman, Peter Tamburro, Mark Taylor, Dan Lucas, Al Lawrence, Myron and Rachel Lieberman, Howard Goldowsky, Eric Johnson, Jeff Roland, Eric Holcomb, Harvey Lerman, David Sands, Matthew Bengtson, Randy Hough, Adam Caveny, John J. Dill, Keith Ammann, GM Andy Soltis, IM Anthony Saidy, IM John Donaldson, Rob Fusco, John Hartmann, Paul Fielding, Neil Brennan. Among this diverse group, one can find experts in any field.

This task, though a great privilege and pleasure, and one I look forward to continuing next year, is rather time consuming. I am fortunate to have family and friends who help me meet the continued real world challenges. This year, Sally Schuster, Debra Downing, and Simon Varner, deserve special mention for their help. More important than all of this help is the patience and understanding of my wife Brandy, and to her I give the biggest thank you of all.

If you are interested in chess journalism I stronly suggest you check out the website (http://chessjournalism.org/) and join the Chess Journalists of America.

Quick Note from Ohio

According to Brandy, my wife, I don't blog enough.  So, I thought I would take a quick moment to do so.  As expected, June has been fairly quiet in a chess sence, but Juy and August look lively.

1)  Tri-Bridges is doing well in the Mastermind League (see Links and Tri - Bridges CC tabs for more information.)

2)  The FM Dov Gorman seminars are planned for Bryn Mawr on July 13 and July 20.  If you are between 1100 and 1800 and are interested in attending, please let me know.  You can attend one seminar without attending the other and it is $60 for the day (bring your own lunch.)  One seminar will focus on strategic planning and the other will be about endgames.

2)  Dov's club is running the 2nd Annual Fourth of July Open.  $15k in projected prizes and you can see all the information at the bottom of the blog entry.

3)  The Holly Heisman Memorial has quite a list of prizes and we are getting some strong players signed up.  You can find full information by clicking on the HHM Info tab.

4)  The contracts were signed for the Triple Crown event (3 state titles in 2 days!!)  I am not sure if the flyers went out correctly for that event (we are testing some contact procedures for the PSCF), so please feel free to let me know if you have or have not recieved information on the event.

5)  My camps in Downingtown and Methacton are still on schedule.  The Methacton ones are generally pretty strong and are real good for everyone, but especially tournament players with some experience.  The ones in Downingtown tend to have newer players and should be particularly good for those who haven't yet tried out tournament or who have maybe just been to 1 or 2 tournaments.  You can sign up for those at https://shiningknightschess.com/camps/summer-chess-camps.html .  Remember, not only do you get a week of classes, but you get a chess set and a new t-shirt!  This year's pattern is pretty cool.

6)  I am excited to be going to the White Collection on Tuesday and will try to make a blog report of the experience when I get back.

A Day with No Students

Posted by joshuamiltonanderson on May 21, 2014 at 12:05 AM Comments comments (3)

Tuesday is the day that I don't teach students.  I see at least 3 every other day of the week and though I could find more to fit into Tuesday, I choose to keep this day free so that I might work on other things.  What sort of things does a chess coach do on a day he doesn't coach?  Well, I am glad you asked.

1.  I started the day corresponding with potential judges and book companies that might be involved with the Chess Journalists of America Awards.  Thanks to Everyman Chess, I was introduced to a very fun app designed for reading chess books and letting the reader see the moves described played out on a board.

2.  I then worked on updating the website to reflect all the generous prizes dontated to the HHM.  I also updated the flyer and sent the okayed TLA (Tournament Listing Announcement) to the USCF.

3.  I updated the shop part of the website as well to include the 3 sections of the "Triple Crown" event, scheduled for August 16 - 17.

4.  Though I didn't have any students today, I spent  a little bit of time looking for games to use as various examples.  I am always looking for good games that teach tactical themes or strategic ideas.  This lead to me doing a little bit of sorting throug my books and magazines, though there is still much to do before the office is properly in order.

5.  I worked on a letter to send to the schools of PA, so the schools can be made more aware of scholastic events.  Though I don't have as many emails on file as I thought, I still was able to create/refine a workable list that I will put to good use soon.

6.  I did a little background research to help prepare for some research I will be doing in Ohio next month at the White Collection in the Cleveland Public Library.

7.  I looked further into getting t-shirts printed for the Tri-Bridges Chess Club.  I believe we will have some for the general public to purchase and of course some for our club members by mid-June.  I also decided that since we were going to have an unexpected guest (someone who can't regularly come to the club, but he told his mom that attending the club was one of the things he wanted for his birthday), we would use that reason, along with a celebration of school ending/summer beginning, to have a little cake and ice cream on June 5th.

8.  I rescheduled a few students around the upcoming holiday and laid the ground work for possibly getting another student.

9.  I worked on my exam to become a senior tournament director.  It is do the beginning of June, so I am a little behind where I want to be, but I am making progress.

10.  A friend is working on designing a news letter for his club and I am working on finding/creating a couple of puzzles for it.

11.  Contacted the USCF concerning some trouble I was having with some forms they sent regarding some invitational events they have connected to the U.S. Open.

12.  Began putting together some information for someone who can hopefully update the state scholastic page.

All and all, a very pleasant day and I am very fortunate to get to spend my day with such interesting and varied work.  I am curious though - is this is what people thought a chess coach did with his one day a week away from teaching?

Dusting Off

Hello,

After almost 18 months, I thought I should write a new entry.  As has been discussed previously, I am not much of a blogger and one should not expect that to change.  Nonetheless, there have been many substantial changes and those are worth noting.

1)  I am in the process of securing a business license.  This have numerous benefits that I hope visitors will notice over time.

2)  I have become the State Scholastic Coordinator for Pennsylvania.  This new role will lead to a wide variety of exciting and interesting new tasks and I look forward to being involved with the Pennsylvania State Chess Federation (PSCF) in this capacity.

3)  Over the next couple of months I will begin to put together some packets that will have lots of training exercises as well as some non-chess material.  I hope that you will all enjoy them.

4)  I will be doing quite a few updates to the website over the next few weeks.  The structure shouldn't change much, but lots of update information will be added.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone! I hope everyone has a wonderful day! I am looking forward to football games and an opportunity to spend a relaxing day with my wife. Several family members will be visiting tomorrow.

While wishing everyone a Happy Thanksgiving, I wanted to take a moment to congratulate the winners of the Greater Scholastic Chess Championship, held a couple of weeks ago. Aneesh Raparla, a student of mine, won the K-3 section. The K-6 section was won by Tate Park. The K-12 section was won by Angel Josh Hernandez-Camen, Andy Weng, and Adam H.Serota. Josh won the title and the seat at the Philadelphia Junior Invitational on tie breaks.

Also, I was recently elected as Scholastic Coordinator of Pennsylvania. This means several things, primarily that I am responisble for the 2014 Scholastic State Championship. This event is always held in south central PA, near Carlisle, so that we get people from all over the state to come. If you have any thoughts, ideas, concerns about the event, please feel free to contact me.

In closing, I want to reiterate that I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Update

It turns out, I am not a great blogger. For those I have had the pleasure of talking to, this may come as a surprise, it certainly did me. Perhaps I shouldn't be so suprised. My parents will tell you that I didn't talk much as a child, and of course, now, I am almost never quiet. There are two really great events that I got to be a part of recently that I should mention.

The first, is that I was invited to help out the Philadelphia Art Museum. They have a great new exhibit "Dancing Around the Bride" (http://www.philamuseum.org/exhibitions/765.html) and in one case they have several shelves dedicated to Duchamp's chess interest. I was fortunate enough to get to go to the museum and help decide what went onto the shelves for display. It was a truly great experience and I was thrilled to be involved in the project.

The second is that Shining Knights had it's first tournament of the year (excluding FNAs) and I am extremely proud of all of my students who participated. A student of mine at least tied for first in each section (there were three sections total) and my other two students who participated both scored in the top half of their respective sections. The next Shining Knights event is on the 10th and that is the City Scholastic Championship at Maple Glen (http://shiningknightschess.com/tournaments/product/1022-2012-greater-philadelphia-scholastic-chess-championship.html). I hope to see everyone there!

All of this activity, plus getting a few new students and preparing for the policy meeting of the Pennsylania State Chess Fecderation, has put my work on the Anthologies a bit behind schedule, but I will be catching up soon.

Before I end, I want to say that I hope everyone managed to not have too much trouble from Sandy and I want to add a quick thank you to everyone who has been helping the victims of Sandy.

Tournaments and Coming Attractions

Over the last two weeks, I have had the great pleasure of directing the Philadelphia Junior Invitational and the Holly Heisman Memorial, as well as being the chief coordinating judge for the Chess Journalists of America. Many people have been involved in each of these events and i just wanted to thank everyone as all of our great work couldn't have been done without them. That being said, I am looking forward to getting to spend a few weeks focusing on camps for Silver Knights and my private students. Then, sometime in September/early October, we will have our first pdfs for people to purchase focusing on various types of pen and paper puzzles (like wordsearches) and chess puzzles!

Happy Father's Day!

I want to wish a Happy Father's Day to all the father's out there, many of whom taught chess to their children. I know, because one of mine did. He taught me a great many other things as well and I appreciate them all. My other father, I didn't really know until recently as I was growing up in Pennsylvania and he was in the military and then worked for the state of California, but I am enjoying getting to know him better now.

I have no human children, but I do have quite a group of the animal kind. I have 9 birds, a bunch of fish, 2 gerbils, 2 turtles, 4 rabbits, and 2 cats. A couple of the rabbits can be seen in the photo gallery. Oh, we will not be putting up pictures of the fish playing chess - so don't get your hopes up!

Greetings!
